Serial ATA (SATA) Cable, 1.6 feet
Serial ATA Data Cable, 0.5 Meter (1.6 feet), 150Mbps. The WhataCable! Serial ATA cable is a much smaller than traditional IDE ribbon cables and is therefore conserves space in the case and reduces heat by allowing better air circulation.
Also the IDE cable is limited to 40 CM in length while the serial ATA cable does not have this restriction.
There are two main reasons for the industry shift to SATA cables. 1. When the data is sent in parallel (IDE) it requires a lot of signals to be sent at the same time. This causes electrical interference and can result in data transfer problem. When you use serial technology you only need to send and receive the signal on data bit at a time causing less interference than parallel transfers.
2. If you are sending data via parallel technology, it requires a lot more wires. IDE (parallel) cables can be a real challenge when trying to keep a system cool and running smoothly. They also get in the way of other wires running throughout the system. All of the other data transfer standards we use today are based on the serial data transfer system technology, such as; USB, Ethernet and Firewire.
